A Little Slice of Home

on July 31, 2013

IMG_3873IMG_3871It first caught my attention while I was visiting Athens over spring break. Why are so many people walking around in F&M t-shirts? I finally asked someone about the European fascination with a small liberal arts college in Lancaster, PA. The young guy I asked knowingly informed me that the t-shirts were actually the creation of a famous Italian designer. I was dubious, but a quick google search solved the mystery. It seems that two Italian designers discovered an F&M sweater in a London thrift shop. They loved the logo and started a fashion label based solely on the name, with sales last year reaching $61 million. Although the college itself isn’t profiting directly from the label, Franklin & Marshall decided that the free PR is in the school’s best interest. Win-win!
