Goodie In Greece

IMG_3948Making friends in Athens has been a bit more difficult than I anticipated. I’ve met a variety of friendly people through the Embassy, but most of the women my age are trailing spouses with children. They’re wonderful — just at a different stage in life. Yesterday I grabbed coffee with Natalie (whom I met after taking one of her yoga classes at the Embassy), and we hit it off! She’s been in Athens with her husband Rich for the past year. Like me, after working long hours in DC for quite a few years, she now tends to spend her days exploring, exercising, relaxing, cooking, and reading (since apparently it’s nearly impossible even for spouses to get a Greek work visa). Natalie and Rich invited us over for dinner and drinks tonight — lots of laughs over wine, scalloped sweet potatoes, and stuffed jalapenos wrapped in chicken and bacon. So good! Their dog Sophie inexplicably loves cucumber and entertained us with puppy tricks in return for a few slices. They have also very generously allowed us to borrow their Mini Coop for the weekend so Rob and I can take a road trip to Monemvasia. Southern Peloponnese, here we come!
